Cobbler, Crumble, or Crisp? A Blueberry Dessert Revelation

For the longest time, I used the words cobbler, crumble, and crisp interchangeably. I mean, they all have a fruit filling and some kind of delicious topping, so how different could they be? Well, it turns out there is a difference!

  • Cobbler has a biscuit or pie dough topping.
  • Crumble has a streusel-like topping with no oats.
  • Crisp is similar to a crumble but with oats added to the mix.

So apparently, my beloved blueberry dessert is technically a crisp, even though I’ve been calling it a cobbler for years. Who knew?! Well, now I do. 😂

The Best Blueberry Dessert You’ll Ever Have

This recipe has been a labor of love for me over the years. I’ve had so many friends and family tell me it’s the best dessert they’ve ever had, and honestly, I agree! The blueberries are just the right amount of sweet—not overpowering—and the topping? Oh, it’s perfection. It’s crunchy, chewy, and golden-brown deliciousness.

It took me years of experimenting to nail the perfect topping-to-filling ratio. Too little topping, and it just melts into the fruit. Too much, and it overpowers the filling. But I’ve finally got it just right: enough topping to complement the juicy blueberries without taking over.

A Dessert Worth Swooning Over

Making this recipe is super simple. All you need to do is:

  1. Toss the blueberries with sugar and flour and pour them into a baking dish.
  2. Mix up your oat-filled topping and spread it over the fruit.
  3. Bake it, and in just over an hour, you’ll have yourself a slice of dessert heaven.

Pro tip: The only way to eat this is warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting over the top. The combination of the creamy ice cream with the juicy fruit and crunchy topping is just divine.

Perfect for Any Occasion

I usually make this in a big casserole dish for family dinners, but if I’m hosting a party or celebrating something special, I love baking it in individual ramekins for single servings. They’re just as easy to make and add a touch of elegance to any table.

So, whether you call it a cobbler, crumble, or crisp (now we know the difference!), this dessert is guaranteed to impress and satisfy.

  • In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients for the topping and set aside.
  • Depending on how you want to serve this, you can either use a 13.5” x 9.5” baking dish (greased with butter) or, as I like to use, large ramekins for individual servings.
  • Place filling into greased serving dish.
  • Then place topping mix over the blueberry mix.
  • Bake in the oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes if using a baking dish, otherwise if using individual ramekins and depending on the size of your ramekin, perhaps around 45 minutes. Bake until white powder on topping is no longer visible.
